Sometimes, all you need is one person to say,

Let me tell you a secret....

"Yes - you can absolutely do that.."

My husband Pete and I wanted to do a “geocache” wedding.

To drop a date + GPS coordinates to a few select guests, and have them meet us at our favorite Utah desert spot.

It seemed audacious. It seemed bold. It seemed wildly impractical, yet perfectly, deeply us.

And yet, I didn’t have anyone to whisper “you can do that” in my ear.

All I could see was a series of obstacles. There was a lot I didn’t know:

I didn’t know that you can hold special dinners back home for loved ones who can’t hike.
I didn’t know that weddings could be multi-day events, featuring ample time with your crew and safeguarded experiences to be alone as a couple.
I didn’t know that a skilled photographer could capture the epic-ness of an elopement so well that even skeptical parents would wave their album to all their friends, bragging ‘Look what our crazy kids did!’

Let’s pause here for a second.

I didn’t have a guide then - but I do know, intimately, the power of one.

As a small-town Wisconsin kid who worked hard to get into college, I didn’t know what to do with a growing desire I had to explore my ancestral African roots.

My life offered no scripts, no examples, of how to act on that idea. Then, a guidance counselor placed an international study brochure in my hands. She affirmed "Yes, it’s possible."

Showed real paths to making it happen. Gently offered me courage, even when those I love said, “Wait, you want to do what?”

Because I had help, in a mind-expanding flash I went from never seeing the ocean until college, to flying across it to live in Zimbabwe in Southern Africa for six months & meeting family in Nigeria to cap it off. It completely changed the trajectory of my life.

I bet you’ve had a similar experience. And I’m here to tell you:

We encountered many last second road blocks and hiccups towards the end and she nimbly helped us adjust for every single one. By the time we met her we truly felt like we knew her and she was a part of our lives for years.
